The Most Downloaded Mobile Games Last Month

by Victor C.

Mobile has become the most-used gaming platform in recent years, overtaking PC and console gaming both in the number of players and in revenues. This shouldn't be a surprise: according to some estimates, there are more than 3.5 billion smartphones in use today, and the number of smartphone users keeps growing every day.

There are hundreds of thousands of mobile games available in one of the two (or both) app marketplaces today. And this is without the mobile games at JackpotCity online casino that run in the users' web browsers. The JackpotCity has a massive library of hypercasual games that thousands play each day, and, on average, half a dozen new games are added to the collection every month.

Standing out of such a crowd is not an easy task. Still, some games constantly manage to do just that. Today, big studios and independent developers are all releasing mobile games at an unprecedented rate. Today, even high-profile games like "Call of Duty" and "Fortnite" can be played on smartphones. But great graphics are not the key to success - let the list of last month's most popular mobile games be witness to that.

5. Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play fantasy open-world action role-playing game released this September by Chinese developer miHoYo on Windows, PlayStation 4, and both major smartphone platforms. The game received great reviews and quickly became one of the most-downloaded games in the world, especially its iOS version that was the second-most-popular game in the App Store last month.

Genshin Impact takes place in a fantasy world called Teyvat, where a mysterious creature captures one of the twins traveling across the stars. Players take on the role of the "Traveler" who sets out on a journey to free the captured twin while battling warring fractions and supernatural creatures.

4. Garena Free Fire

Garena Free Fire (or Free Fire Battlegrounds) was released in 2017, constantly growing its player base and ultimately becoming the most-downloaded game last year, being voted the "Best Popular Vote Game" by the Google Play Store in 2019.

Garena Free Fire is a "battle royale" game where 50 players parachute on an island where they have to defeat each other using the weapons and equipment they collect. The game is built to run on mid-range or low-end phones, running on pretty much any device.

Garena has remained popular to this day, with more than 80 million active users this summer - and enough downloads last month to warrant its place among the top 5 most popular games.

3. Join Clash 3D

Join Clash 3D is living proof that a mobile game doesn't need to have state-of-the-art graphics to be successful. The game looks pretty basic and so is its premise: players have to control a small group of people across an obstacle course, collect more team members on their way, avoid traps, and reach the castle with enough members to take on the defenders - and still have one to break down the gate.

The game was released in February and today it has more than 100 million downloads.

2. Subway Surfers

Subway Surfers is an old game - it was released in 2012 and immediately made endless runners popular on mobile. Today, it is available on all platforms - it even runs on Amazon Kindle of all devices. The game crossed the 2 billion download mark in 2018, and its popularity is still unbroken: almost 20 million players downloaded it last month alone.

1. Among Us

Among Us has been around for more than two years - it was released in June 2018 - but it was never very popular. Until 2023, that is - because this year, it received a lot of attention from Twitch streamers and YouTubers, which pushed it into the mainstream. And made it perhaps the most-played game of the year.

Teams of four to ten players have to perform various tasks in a space setting, like basic maintenance, engine refueling, and such. There are impostors among them, though - instead of completing tasks, the impostors sabotage various systems, travel through air vents, and kill Crewmates. The crew has to complete all tasks or eliminate all impostors to win. Impostors have to sabotage systems or eliminate enough Crewmates to equal their numbers. Any player can call an Emergency Meeting where crewmates (and impostors) can share their suspicions and vote for a player to be spaced.

The game has seen a huge surge in popularity this summer, and it's still among the most-downloaded mobile games in the world: last month, its user base grew by almost 75 million.
